The Caretaker is the result of a 10 week part time course. We were assigned the company 'Dyson' and were asked to develop a strategic product concept based on the company's market and technology. The focus of this course lay not on the technical detailing of the product, but the development of a relevant and future-proof concept for the cliënt based on solid research.
Working in a team of 5, we started by researching Dyson and it's competitors. After defining a domain - Making gardening easy and fun for everyone - we conducted a market research by defining context factors and user frustrations. We then created a strategic design direction by combining this with the results of an extensive research into Dyson's technology and the main competitors in the chosen domain. Finally, all conclusions were combined to create a product concept and the first designs and prototypes were made.
The Dyson Caretaker is a strategic product concept of a robotic lawnmower and weed remover. Based on Dyson's digital motors and other technologies in their robotic vacuum, this product uses conventional technology to mow your lawn. The automatic weed remover, however, is completely new. After the user has tagged weeds with an RFID tag, the Caretaker extracts them whilst mowing the grass. The concept was developed to be brought to market in 5 to 10 years and would still require extensive R&D to become market ready. However, technological feasibility and market interest have already been proven in this project.
